Importance of management feed back

July 18, 2016

Strategic decisions are strictly for top management but the eventual and overall effects are meant to be felt in every department of the organization for a long time, as a matter of fact  strategic decisions are usually a long term plan of an organisation which include setting targets and drawing plans to execute them , identifying some objectives and key performance indicators (be it financial or not) that will actually enhance the accomplishments of this objectives. How ever, most of the management eggheads and think tanks doesn’t really take cognisance of the reactions of the staff towards the set objectives, hence the need for management feed back. A  very typical example of what expose BANK managements (importance of management feed back) is the issue of the TSA that the federal government introduced, many banks policies is just to have the required targets neglecting other areas that will bring more money to the bank, we can all see how many banks are retrenching staff due to the fact that they fail to earnest other part of banking that can bring goodwill and other financial benefits, most marketers relied solely on government funds to survive hence they get promotions easily, they (management) forgot that even operation staff welfare should be put in to consideration too but all the banks policies favour the marketers only, this singular decision to focus on the marketers is detrimental to the operation staff and most of them hide their respective ideas,  a good friend of mine who has been working with a first generation bank since 2006 once makes his lamentation known during an interaction that they as Head of Operation don’t easily get promotion as compare to their Marketing counterparts but they (operation) gave the banks the image they portray in which the marketers are riding on, hence some of the operation staff get lackadaisical in their attitude by allowing queues  in the banking hall and not treating the customers so well, but all this reactions were not noticed by management hence some customers will tends to bank with a bank with less queues, what they failed to realized is most of the customers that has gone cannot easily be convinced to come back now that those government accounts are now single treasury.

Another example is the government officials especially the revenue officials , most times government only makes a decision to increase the revenue of a state but fail to put a proper working conditions in place for the revenue officials, this singular reason makes them to take bribes and divert some government funds to their personal pocket. Moreso, some government doesn’t want to contract the training of revenue staff to revenue consultant due to fees of the consultants but they fail to realize that the long term effect will be on the government revenue, take for example a revenue official shouldnt be handling cash and his renumerations should  be very attractive so as not take bribes from tax agents, as a matter of fact those that needs to be prioritized in the revenue board are those that go out on negotiations e.g  those that do tax audit , enumerations , monitoring and ministerial(i.e revenue officials at Ministry of lands, urban and regional planning, commerce and industries e.t.c). The above set of people really needs to be prioritized to avoid wrong assessments, other internal controls should be put inplace. While government is setting an agenda to raise revenue they fail to check the feed backs as mentioned above hence, they fail to optimize the revenue potentials of the state.

After a critical look at the two points above you will agree that most managements of organizations dont really show interest in feed backs including government  and it tends to hurt the company at the long run . Below are the consequences of not  having a management feed back:

it demoralize staff, lost of key personnel, it sabotage the management objectives, some staff will tends to divert company’s fund for personal,  it can even collapse the entity( as in going concern), it can cause enemity among staff since one staff is prioritized above another, collapses management goal congruence.e.t.c it is advisable to have a feed back to know how staff react to your policies.

Below are how to get feed back from staff:

Regular appraisals, providing management feed back box , protection of whistle blower, organization of retreat and symposiums, provision of adequate welfare for staff.e.t.c
